GERGANA TABAKOVA

Gergana Tabakova (born 1992) is a visual artist based in Sofia, Bulgaria. A key part of the artist’s credo is to perceive the objects and the situations as an occasion to express their inner potential as immaterial information. Gergana’s artworks represent a part of a research in which rudimentary fascination, emotion and thought, engendered by the connection between immaterial and material object, are linked together.

Statement:

My work explores how spatial and material structures shape human experience and produce both order and constraint. I am interested in the ways society organizes the world through forms, spaces, and objects.
Many of my works grow out of an interest in how we organize space around us through architecture, objects, decoration and everyday materials. These structures often appear stable and orderly, yet they also carry traces of social rules and cultural habits. In my work I try to shift or interrupt these systems and structures in order to allow moments of imbalance, fragmentation, or unexpected relationships between elements.

Painting is the starting point of my work, but I often treat it as something that can expand beyond the flat canvas. I am interested in how color, texture and structure can move into space and become part of a larger environment. Over time, my practice has moved from painting-based investigations toward spatial installations that engage directly with architectural and social structures. Architectural forms, textile references, patterns, and fragments of decorative motifs often appear in my projects. I see them as materials that hold memory. They carry stories about domestic life, labor, gender roles, personal experiences or collective traditions. Alongside painting, I work with materials such as polycarbonate, textiles, ceramics, plastic, or wood, creating works that move between painting, object, and installation. Through these approaches, painting becomes not only an image but a structure that can reveal tensions within the spaces and systems we inhabit.
